Ghana’s economy appears to be much bigger than the $16 billion that was earlier estimated.

Though the Head of Economics and Statistics at the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Magnus Ebo Duncan, will not reveal the actual size of the economy as the review of the national economic output would be released next month, BUSINESS GUIDE learnt that the country’s economy has a size of between $25-35 billion.

The review of the national economic output would consider the years 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and as well capture activities currently excluded from the official data including funeral costs, cash dispenser user charges, air travel and private education.

According to him, everything has almost been completed but some experts are still reviewing the methodology among others.

“Generally I don’t know a country that has re-based its national account that there is no increase”.

Last year the country’s economy size in provisional terms was a little over $21 billion in current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but the review which will take into account the 2006 base year for prices, would give a bigger figure of the economy.

“The picture points out that there is an increase in the size of the economy. Look at the number of roads that are asphalted, vehicles on the roads, the significant growth in the telecommunication sector and the banking sector”, he emphasized.

He explained that there have been shifts in the sectoral contribution and some activities which were unimportant have now been considered.

“The basket will be increased to include the informal sector and others as well,” said Asuo Afram, Head of Pricing at the GSS.

Importantly, Ghana’s economy saw significant growth in the last five years where there were increases in the number of banks, insurance firms, telecommunication companies, reduction in the poverty rate from about 35 percent in 2002 to 28.5 percent in 2005 among many others.

The re-sizing of the $16-billion-a-year Ghanaian economy, which will benefit from oil revenues from the huge Jubilee Oil Field by December this year, is expected to include two components that could potentially inflate the GDP level.

Analysts argued that a bigger GDP would mean Ghana’s fiscal deficit was not as large as feared and perhaps, did not require the high dosage of austerity measures prescribed.

World Bank Country Representative, Dr. Ishac Diwan had earlier told Reuters that the move to review the economy would prompt many to reassess their view of the Ghanaian economy, already one of the largest in West Africa and one of the few to have launched a Eurobond. The $750 million bond was launched in September 2007.

South Africa, a middle-income country, in 2007 was ranked the biggest economy in Africa with a size of $467.6 billion, followed by Egypt with $431.9 billion.

Nigeria, an oil producing country; Algeria, also oil producing country and Morocco followed suit with economy sizes of $294.8 billion, $268.9 billion and $127 billion respectively.

Sudan, Angola, Libya, Tunisia and Kenya were ranked 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively with economy sizes of $107.8, $80.95, $78.79, $77.16 and $57.65 billion.

Ghana with its rich natural resources such as minerals and cocoa, was among the top 20 on the continent. Its provisional growth rate estimates for last year was 4.7 percent, a drop from the previous 7.3 percent.

Meanwhile, the quarterly GDP rate of the country will be released alongside the size of the economy.

The Awutu Bawjiase Police have arrested Kweku Busia, a farmer, who killed his wife for threatening to divorce him. After shooting Madam Abena Bannor, Busia, 41, he rushed to the house of his friend, Yaw Mensah, and used the batten of his gun to beat Mensah’s three children, resulting in the death of the youngest at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital.

The Agona Swedru District Police Commander, Superintendent Philip Alleawobu, told reporters that Agona Swedru, at the weekend, that in December last year, Busia took one cedi from his wife’s revenue from a drinking spot and gave it to his visiting father in-law for his transportation.

According to the District Police Commander, Busia’s friend, Mr Yaw Mensah who was then at the bar, informed Busia’s wife when she returned home about the money.

The Police Commander said this sparked off trouble between the couple resulting in the woman leaving for her father’s home to seek divorce. He said on March 15, Busia went to his estranged wife and asked her to accompany him to the bush in search of firewood for the preparation of gari. But in the bush, Busia asked her if she would return to her matrimonial home and she declined.

The District Commander said the suspect then shot and instantly killed Madam Bannor at a close range. He then rushed to the house of Mensah, whom he blamed for his wife’s desertion but did not meet him. He turned his anger on the children, who had locked themselves in on seeing him, broke the door and battered them until Akua Broni, two-and half years old, fell unconscious.

However, the shouts of the children: Charity Afful 12, and Joyce Afful 8, attracted some people who went to their rescue. They sent Akua Broni to the hospital but she died the following day. The Police Commander said Busia was later arrested by his neighbours and sent to the Police at Bawjiase, explaining that while he was in custody it was reported that he had already shot and killed his wife earlier in the day.

Two men who filmed themselves viciously attacking a man in a Glasgow street were caught out when they posted the video on You Tube.

Ryan Currie and Frank Tominey laughed and joked as they recorded the attack after meeting 31-year-old James Lavery as he walked home.

Currie, 19, and Tominey, 21, shouted “watch this troops” before head-butting, punching and kicking Mr Lavery to the ground and shouting “you’ve just been done”.

Police officers recognised the pair after carrying out a search on You Tube days later and they were quickly arrested.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday, Currie and Tominey, who were both remanded in custody, admitted assaulting Mr Lavery at Mossvale Road, Easterhouse, on August 6 last year.

Prosecutor Michelle Tollan told the court that Mr Lavery was walking home from his sister’s house when he was stopped by the two men at a secluded lane.

Miss Tollan said: “In the video two male voices ask Mr Lavery, who seems to be under the influence of drink or drugs, to smile for the camera.

“A voice is then heard saying ‘Ryan Currie and Frankie here bamming up a jugger’.

“The verbal mocking continues for a while before the two males show themselves to the camera and it is the two accused.

“Ryan Currie then says ‘watch this troops’ and asks ‘ready?’ before punching the complainer and Frank Tominey is then seen headbutting the complainer nine times.

“The complainer doubles over as Tominey kicks him in the head and Currie shouts ‘smash the junkie’.

“Currie then passes the camera over to Tominey and says ‘video me now’ before smiling at the camera and punching into the complainer’s head and body.

“Tominey then says ‘here my turn’ and kicks the complainer again before Currie ushers him away.

The court heard that police later found Mr Lavery with cuts to his face arms but he refused to tell them what had happened.

The video was posted on You Tube a few days later under the name “Ryan & Frankie Junkie Whoopin” and officers recognised Currie and Tominey.

When Currie was later arrested at his home, he told police: “Nae bother, I’ll plead to that, ten-year.”

Tominey admitted to being involved after officers showed the video to him.

Sheriff Robert Anthony told the pair that a custodial sentence was “utmost” in his mind due to the gravity of the offence.

He deferred sentence until next month for reports and remanded Currie and Tominey in custody
