Rescue crews fanned out across isolated parts of Mississippi Sunday in a search for survivors of a devastating tornado that tore through the state and killed 10 people, including three children.

Deputy state fire marshal James Jackson said crews resumed search and rescue operations at daylight in Yazoo City, one of the areas hardest hit by the tornado.

High winds tore the roofs of houses and buildings across Yazoo County. Gov. Haley Barbour, who grew up in the area, said the tornado caused “utter obliteration” in the hilly countryside.

“This tornado was enormous,” Barbour told The Associated Press.

Emergency services workers will travel to isolated homes they could not reach in the hours after the tornado hit Saturday afternoon, he said.

At least 100 houses in Yazoo County were made uninhabitable, Barbour estimated, as well as another 38 homes in Choctaw County.

Officials were still trying to learn how many people were made homeless as a result of the storm, he said. And it may take until Tuesday to get an accurate measure of the damage.

Another 200 homes were damaged or destroyed in other counties and several dozen people were injured.

Late Sunday afternoon, meteorologists were still trying to find out whether a single tornado or several tornados moved through the area, downing trees and ripping houses from their foundations.

The same storm system sent heavy thunderstorms rolling through northern Alabama and Georgia early Sunday. High winds knocked down trees and damaged buildings in both states.

The storm began just outside the Mississippi state line in Louisiana, where a tornado destroyed 12 homes, as well as warehouses at a chemical plant.

The storm then moved eastward into Mississippi and Yazoo County, where it killed four people. One person died in Holmes County. Another five, including three children, were killed in Choctaw County to the northeast.

Jim Pollard, a spokesperson for the American Medical Response ambulance service, said four patients from Yazoo County were airlifted to area hospitals, while another 20 were taken by car or ambulance to local medical centres. At least four people are in critical condition, he said.

Downed power lines left hundreds of residents across Mississippi without electricity, while blocked roadways kept them in their homes. Officials said power may not be restored in some areas until Tuesday or Wednesday.

“We have the energy crew in trying to restore power, still doing a search of the residents,” Kenny Lewis, the Yazoo City Fire Department’s division chief, told CTV News Channel. “As of now we are almost certain that everyone is accounted for.”

Many residents returned to destroyed homes to salvage what they could from the rubble and begin cleaning up. In Choctaw County, which was hit hard by the storm, the sound of chainsaws and the smell of downed pine were in the air.

National Guard soldiers driving Humvees and a Blackhawk helicopter patrolled badly damaged Yazoo City. They were accompanied by state troopers and police from other parts of the state.

In the same county, more than 30 members of Hillcrest Baptist Church, which was destroyed by a tornado, gathered to sing hymns and pray in the building’s wreckage.

Yazoo County resident Josiah Moton and his girlfriend Morgan Hayden were at home when the sky darkened and the winds picked up. When Moton went outside to move his car, “the wind was coming so string it tried tot tote me away,” he said.

The two huddled in a bathtub as their house was completely destroyed. Despite the destruction around them, they escaped the storm uninjured.

“Someone else’s kitchen sink is where our kitchen used to be,” Hayden said.

* Gross Pay: Includes the total amount of income that you earned during a particular pay period. A pay period is determined by your employer, but is typically bi-weekly or monthly. This figure does not factor in tax withholdings.
* Net Pay: Includes the amount of income that you actually take home after all withholdings have been applied. It is the amount of money that you take straight to the bank!
* Federal Tax Amount: When you were first hired by your employer, you were required to fill out a W-4 form. This form covers any tax that you may owe to the Federal government come tax time. It is deducted incrementally from each paycheck, and can vary depending on the number of exemptions you chose to claim.
* State Tax Amount: Depending on your state of residence, you may or may not be required to pay a state tax. * Local Tax Amount: Although rare, a local tax is sometimes applied to employees of certain cities, counties or school districts. For example, if you live in New Jersey, but work in New York City, you will be required to pay not only New Jersey state tax, but also New York City tax on your earnings.
* Social Security: The Federal government requires every employee to have a certain percentage of their paycheck withheld for social security purposes. This entitles you to receive a monthly social security payment upon retirement. The amount is currently 6.2% of your monthly earnings (up to a maximum earnings of $94,200 in 2006). Under the Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) your employer will also contribute another 6.2% toward this for a total of 12.4%. The annual percent withheld and the maximum earning is subject to annual increase.
* Medicare: Like social security withholdings, Medicare withholdings are also mandatory. Every employee pays 1.45% of their paycheck toward Medicare, and every employer contributes an additional 1.45% on behalf of the employee. Upon eligibility for social security, an employee is entitled to coverage for a majority of their medical expenses.
* Year-to-date (for pay and deductions): The year-to-date fields on your pay stub show how much you have paid toward a particular withholding at any point in the calendar year. This can be useful when budgeting for monthly expenses or long-term goals.

Additional Items that May Appear on Your Paycheck Stub

Although not required, the following are items that may appear on your paycheck stub and are useful to money management and relevant to your employment status.

* Insurance Deductions: Monthly payments for such types of insurance as health (medical and dental), and life insurance.
* Retirement Plan Contributions: Plans such as 401K or 403(B) retirement savings plans.
* Leave Time: Including vacation hours or sick hours. Most employers will detail how many hours have been used to date, and how many hours are remaining for the calendar year.
* Childcare Assistance: If offered by your employer, this amount may appear on each paycheck as a pre-tax benefit.
* Important Notices: Employers often use a portion of the paycheck stub to communicate important pieces of information to their employees such as wage increases or notifications about tax filings.

These loans will invariably have higher interest rates and other less favourable conditions and this will be the price you pay for having a lower credit rating.

Since loans are used to finance homes, education, cars, and most other large purchases in life, the inability to get access to credit, or only to be able to get it at less attractive terms and rates, is a substantially reason to care about your credit report and try to keep it in as good a condition as possible.

Credit reports are also used when you apply for renting or leasing accommodation. This is usually because the landlord wants to be fairly certain that you’ll be able to pay your rent as it falls due. Cruising through the darkness in rough seas, the USS Ross encountered a rogue wave that smashed into the destroyer’s bow, sending a shudder along the entire ship that knocked sleeping crew out of their bunks and damaged the sonar housing.

As alarms sounded, sleepy sailors scrambled to shore up the leak.

“We cracked the hull and kept on going like it was nothing,” retired sailor Jonathan Staeblein, of Hagerstown, Md., recalled. In fact, the 510-foot destroyer was never out of service for repairs during any deployment in the three years he served aboard as an electronic warfare technician.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyers such as the USS Ross and USS Cole, which survived a terrorist suicide bombing in Yemen, have proven to be durable workhorses in the U.S. Navy.

Over the 22 years since construction of the first one began at Bath Iron Works, the ship has steamed into the record book: The destroyer’s production run has outlasted every other battleship, cruiser, destroyer and frigate in U.S. Navy history. The only warship in production for longer was the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, said Norman Polmar, a naval historian, author and analyst.

Thanks to a decision by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Arleigh Burke destroyer production will continue for at least a few more years. The defense budget signed by President Barack Obama in December includes money for the first of at least three more ships. There’s talk of many more being built.

At Bath Iron Works, along the banks of the Kennebec River, there are three of the ships in various stages of production.

“They’re fast and they move. And they’re a lot of fun to drive,” said Lt. Cmdr. Robert J. Brooks, executive officer of USS Wayne E. Meyer, a Bath-built destroyer commissioned in October.

Retired Rear Adm. Michael K. Mahon, the Navy’s former deputy director of surface warfare, said the ships run no risk of being outdated any time soon.

“It’s the envy of the world,” said Mahon. “Every surface warship officer in every navy in the world would love to command an Arleigh Burke.”

The original warship was conceived during the Cold War, when Bath Iron Works was abuzz with shipbuilders pounding, grinding, welding, plumbing and wiring ships at a furious pace to meet President Ronald Reagan’s audacious goal of a 600-ship Navy. Shipbuilders toiled long hours working elbow-to-elbow in a haze created by welders inside steel hull segments that were sweltering in the summer and cold in the winter.

The number of Bath shipbuilders peaked at 12,000 by the time the USS Arleigh Burke was commissioned on July 4, 1991.
